Opening Statement of Commerce Committee Chairman StevensJuly 20, 2006We welcome you to the renovated Commerce Committee room. We have a very short agenda really, today. We have some nominations and three resolutions, plus two bills and we’ll get to those quickly. I want to point out these resolutions we have today, to begin with. The first one expresses the appreciation of this Committee for the assistance, cooperation and hard work of those involved in refurbishing our Committee’s hearing room. This has been months and months of hard work, and we’ve had the cooperation of the Rules Committee, thanks to Chairman Lott, who’s here, and the staff of the Architect of the Capitol and Capitol workers, and our full staff has been involved in this. We have now a technologically correct, advanced hearing room. We have wi-fi remote cameras from the studio, teleconference capability from the dais, an adaptable dais, monitored microphones, state-of-the art sound systems, adjustable chandelier lights, and, well that’s important for television capability I might add, and many other features that will help us carry out our Committee’s responsibility. I do thank all concerned. The staff has worked very hard to have this available. We’ve had to delay it a couple times, but I think it’s very nicely done and I hope you all will agree. Let me say, we have, on the agenda, these bills S.R. 3661 to amend section 29 of the International Air Transportation Competition Act of ’79 relating to air transportation to and from Love Field. We have S. 3679, the National Transportation Safety Board Reauthorization Act of 2006, and we have the two resolutions. The first one I mentioned expressing our appreciation, and the second, Senate Concurrent Resolution 71, a concurrent resolution expressing the Sense of the Congress that states should require candidates for drivers’ licenses to demonstrate an ability to exercise greatly increased caution when driving in the proximity of a potentially visually impaired individual. There will be a series of items here. First, I want to turn to my colleague, our Co-chairman, and see if he has any statement to begin with, and has a motion to offer on behalf of the Committee.
