July 13, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV and Ranking Member Kay Bailey Hutchison issued the following statements after Christopher P. Bertram was nominated to be Assistant Secretary for Budget and Programs and Chief Financial Officer at the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“Mr. Bertram brings a high caliber of expertise to this vital position in our government,” said Rockefeller.  “His extensive background in numerous transportation related issues will complement his exceptional leadership. I look forward to seeing his confirmation move quickly through the full Senate and I congratulate him on his nomination.”

“While our Committee will miss Chris’ expertise on complex transportation issues, his public service to our country will continue, just in a different capacity,” said Senator Hutchison. “His knowledge and unique experience will continue to help improve America’s transportation system, and I will work with Chairman Rockefeller to see that his confirmation moves swiftly.”

Mr. Bertram has been a member of the Commerce Committee staff for more than six years and has worked on legislation covering aviation, highway and auto safety, railroads, fuel efficiency standards for automobiles and transportation security. Before joining the Committee, he served from 2001 until 2003 in the Federal Aviation Administration as both its assistant administrator for financial services and its chief financial officer.
