Rockefeller Statement on the Court of Appeals Decision Overturning Indecency Rules

July 13, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, today issued the following statement regarding the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit’s decision overturning the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) indecency policy. The opinion says the FCC’s guidelines on indecency violate the First Amendment.

“I am disappointed by the Second Circuit’s decision today,” said Chairman Rockefeller. “With more indecent and violent programming available than ever before, this ruling sends a troubling message. We need to do more, not less, to help parents across the country get the resources they need to protect their children from harmful programming.”
