Majority Statement
Chairman Roger Wicker
Before we turn to our hearing on Industries of the Future, we meet in a brief executive session to consider the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement Implementation Act. After passing the House with overwhelming bipartisan support, the bill was referred to six Senate committees of jurisdiction and we have seen strong support in those committees that have already approved the measure. Today, perhaps, we will see the same bipartisan support on the Commerce Committee.
Trade with our two most important partners, Canada and Mexico, has more than quadrupled in the past 25 years, reaching nearly $1.4 trillion in 2018. To reflect the twenty-first century marketplace, USMCA, which will replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, is poised to deliver $68 billion in economic growth and 176,000 good-paying jobs for Americans. Passing USMCA expeditiously will unleash this economic opportunity bolstering America’s workforce.
I urge my colleagues to support USMCA Implementation Act. With that, I now turn to my friend the Ranking Member for any remarks she may have.
