Nevada Business Aviation Association, Arizona Pilots Association Oppose Phil Washington’s Nomination to Lead FAA

March 21, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As concerns regarding Phil Washington’s qualifications to serve as Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continue to grow, the Nevada Business Aviation Association (NBAA) and the Arizona Pilots Association (APA) voiced their opposition to his nomination due to his lack of deep aviation experience, particularly in aviation safety.

The NBAA joined a letter opposing Mr. Washington’s nomination sent by a diverse, nationwide coalition of aviation organizations representing aviation industry workers, pilots, airport officials, and aviation enthusiasts. The Arizona Pilots Association sent its own letter expressing its “strong opposition” to Mr. Washington’s nomination.

In its letter, the Arizona organization noted that its “members represent all aspects of aviation. From Airframe and Powerplant mechanics, to private pilots, instructor pilots and Airline Transport Pilots. Many volunteer on the FAA Safety Team (FAAST) to promote safety initiatives. Many are even employed by the FAA. To say our membership is heavily invested in the success of the FAA would be an understatement.”

The Nevada business aviation and Arizona pilots groups are part of a growing list of organizations and leaders opposed to Phil Washington’s nomination, which includes a group of senior former U.S. Department of Transportation officials and Members of Congress with deep aviation and transportation knowledge and a bicameral group of U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives consisting of military, commercial, and general aviation pilots.
