Opening StatementThis, probably, is the last meeting of this Committee during this Congress. This morning we will hear from nominees to serve on our National Transportation Safety Board and the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. We welcome you, I am sure other members and staff will welcome your willingness to serve at this time.Mr. Chealander has been nominated to become a member of our National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigations the recent school bus accident in Alabama, the plane crash in Kentucky, and I can tell you about the one I was personally involved in and survived as well as an Alaska airline crash that my great friend, in which former head of the BIA, Morris Thompson, and his wife and members of his family were killed. We have seen the work of the NTSB and I think it is one of the fine agencies of our Federal government. I look forward to Mr. Chealander’s comments about what he thinks can be done to improve this fine agency. Senator Hutchinson has submitted a statement for the record in support of your nomination and it will be included in the record before your statement.Mr. Charles Dorkey has been nominated to be a member of the advisory board of the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. Mr. Dorkey has been an active and dedicated resident of New York serving positions with the Hudson River Park Trust, Empire State Development Corporation, and the New York Parks and Conservation Association amongst other things. I have personally gone through both the FBI investigations of your qualifications and your background and I am pleased to say we are happy to have you join the federal government with such a distinguished career set behind you. I notice your family is here and I hope you introduce your family and friends who are here with you today before you make your statement.Senator Inouye’s statement will occur in the record at this place if he gets here.
