Fraudulent Practices in the Moving Industry

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation's Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine today announced a hearing on Protecting Consumers from Fraudulent Practices in the Moving Industry scheduled for Thursday, May 4, 2006, at 10 a.m. in room 562 of the Dirksen Building. Senator Trent Lott (R-Miss.) will preside.

Senator Stevens: Mr. Chairman can I get in here?

Senator Lott: Yes Sir.

Senator Stevens: Can I ask you: you said in your testimony “Since DOT has not set up the company database they were mandated to set up in 1998; consumers have to rely on consumer advocacy websites.” Have you inquired of DOT why they didn’t do that? Have you had anyone involved?

Ms. Edge: No, I don’t know why they didn’t do it.

Senator Lott: Ask the guy sitting to your right before you leave about that.

Senator Stevens: Well I think Mr. Hoemann should take it as a request for the Full Committee that you deliver to us within 30 days a reply to this lady, and tell us why you have not complied with the 1998 Act. Within 30 days we want a document and we’ll have a hearing if we’re not satisfied.
