Good Morning, Mr. Hewko. Thank you for appearing before us as we consider your nomination to become the Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs at the United States Department of Transportation (DOT).
I look forward to learning about your views on the relevant policy issues to this position, and how your past experiences have prepared you to address the responsibilities you will face.
Mr. Hewko, the DOT faces significant challenges in ensuring our transportation system operated safely and efficiently. As Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs you will be directly involved in three policy issues Congress is particularly concerned with: the implementation of slot auctions at New York City Airports, the Essential Air Service (EAS) program, and the on-going Open Skies negotiations between the U.S. and the European Union (EU).
In dealing with these issues, I expect you to work closely and communicate clearly with this Committee. We must work together to find the best path forward for both the White House and the legislative branch. A good relationship between Congress and the DOT is vital if we are going to find solutions to these challenges and improve the quality of our transportation systems.
