Feature Image 8WASHINGTON, D.C.—Chairman John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV today announced the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard will hold a hearing on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. titled, “Deep Sea Challenge: Innovative Partnerships in Ocean Observation.” This hearing will examine ways to expand and leverage public and private partnerships for ocean science and observation.

Witnesses will provide testimony legislation that expands federal ocean research with a specific focus on ocean acidification and the Arctic region. This legislation includes the reauthorization of the Integrated Coastal and Ocean Observing System Act of 2009, the reauthorization of the Federal Ocean Acidification Research and Monitoring Act of 2009, and the Arctic Research, Monitoring and Observing Act of 2013.

On the same day, James Cameron’s DEEPSEA CHALLENGER submersible will be displayed on C St. between the Russell and Dirksen Senate Office Buildings from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This is the vessel Cameron used to explore the deepest place on Earth. Cameron since donated the sub to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for use in future ocean research. This partnership is an example of how continued investment in technology can create opportunities for new ocean observation.
