Thune Statement on GAO Report on FCC’s Lifeline Program

April 23, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, issued the following statement on the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) report released today on the Federal Communications Commission’s Lifeline universal service program.

“In January 2014, I asked GAO to examine the FCC's reforms of the Lifeline program. GAO’s findings released today highlight the need for a comprehensive evaluation of Lifeline’s effectiveness. Before the FCC moves forward with fundamental changes or contemplated expansions to Lifeline, I urge the FCC to conduct a full program evaluation in accordance with GAO’s recommendations, including making public the results of the Broadband Adoption Pilot Program that ended last October.”
