Sens. Cruz, Cantwell, Curtis Reintroduce ‘Spy Fridge’ Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), and Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) recently reintroduced the Informing Consumers About Smart Devices Act, bipartisan legislation that would require the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to create reasonable disclosure guidelines for products equipped with audio or visual recording components that are not obvious, such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, and dishwashers. Many consumers don’t realize a growing number of household devices and appliances come with cameras and/or microphones capable of recording them and their families. Some devices also include Wi-Fi capability to transmit data without their knowledge.
